Marsh Reveals Winner of All-women Hackathon
Berlin | Donnerstag, 21 November 2019
Marsh, the world’s leading insurance broker and risk adviser, today announced the winner of its #ReWRITE all-women risk and insurance Hackathon for Europe, following local contests which took place on 19-20 October in several locations including Milan, Stockholm, Warsaw, Istanbul, and Bucharest.
The local winners progressed to the regional grand final and, following deliberations by an expert panel of judges made up of insurance and technology leaders, the team from Sweden comprised of Linnea Söderlund, Viola Söderlund, and Julia Ye was declared the winner. The three women created a prototype for instant scooter insurance for the growing mobility market. The solution is based on a risk analysis algorithm to best calculate the risk of a specific trip and advises the user on the safest route to take.
The team edged out the competition thanks to their pioneering, deliverable code and innovative approach which incorporated technical solutions, practicality, and potential impact on the insurance industry.
As winners of the regional award, the team received a prize worth €10,000 and earned a trip to Europe’s leading risk management conference, the FERMA Forum – which started yesterday in Berlin – where they were presented with their award by Flavio Piccolomini, President, Marsh International; Siegmund Fahrig, CEO, Marsh Continental Europe; and Sastry Durvasula, Chief Digital Officer and Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Marsh.
Launched in the US earlier this year, the #ReWRITE - for Women, Risk, Insurance, Technology, and Empowerment - Hackathon is designed to provide women of different backgrounds and experiences with a unique opportunity to learn, network, and create next-generation insurtech solutions. Teams work to solve a risk management challenge using emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and internet of things.
“#ReWRITE is creating a fantastic opportunity for women to bring their perspectives to problem solving and product innovation in the insurance industry. Each and every team did a fantastic job and the ideas presented were of an extremely professional nature,” said Jens-Daniel Florian, Head of Digital Strategy & Transformation for Continental Europe at Marsh.
#ReWRITE is part of Marsh’s commitment to accelerating the advancement of women in the industry and is supported by Girls in Tech, a global non-profit that works to put an end to gender inequality in high-tech industries and startups. The Continental Europe event follows the highly successful #ReWRITE Hackathon held in New York and Phoenix earlier this year.
