On the Horizon: The Potential Risks of Drone Technology in Shipping

Autonomous technology has paved the way for unmanned aerial systems and driverless cars, but could it soon be applied to the shipping industry?

The possible uses of autonomous technology are expanding; from recent applications in unmanned aerial systems and driverless cars, to the high seas in the form of remotely controlled, or even fully autonomous ships.

Autonomous technology used in shipping could offer cost savings, safety enhancements, and a greater monitoring of conditions.  However, regulators and insurers are likely to be concerned with how safe this technology would be when used in remotely controlled or fully autonomous ships that operate without a crew on board.

Marsh’s report, On the Horizon: The Potential Risks of Drone Technology in Shipping, examines the challenges from a risk and insurance perspective that stand in the way of autonomous technology entering into use in the shipping industry.
