The 100 Largest Losses in the Hydrocarbon Industry

Marsh’s 25th edition of the 100 largest losses in the energy industry explores the biggest property losses in the hydrocarbon industry from 1978-2017 to identify where risks lie and what can be done to manage them safely and effectively.

Marsh has been collecting data on major losses for more than 40 years, and the database holds records of more than 10,000 losses in the refinery, petrochemical, gas processing, terminals and distribution, and upstream sectors.

As well as examining these losses and the lessons learned, key developments since the last edition of this report include:

  • A significant spike in the number of high-value downstream losses over the past two years, which have had a high impact on the global energy industry.
  • The impact of a string of natural disasters in 2017 had on the downstream energy sector.
  • Lessons that can be learned from historical large losses, with 2018 being the 30th anniversary of the largest oil and gas loss to date – Piper Alpha.
  • Risk recommendations to avoid large losses in the future.
