Truck on a highway in the night

A conversation between Antonio Copercini, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Barilla and Bruno Dotti, Enterprise Risk Services and ESG, Europe Practice Leader at Marsh Advisory.

Together they discussed the multitude of crises that Barilla and the world has faced in recent years starting with the COVID-19 pandemic, the logistic problems that followed when the ship Ever Given ran aground, problems related to sourcing key materials in production and packaging phases of their business, and finally the more recent events that combine to create the polycrisis highlighted in the Global Risks Report 2023.

Despite all the challenges, every problem has a solution and when Bruno asked Antonio if it is possible to be prepared Antonio was in no doubt, “Yes, it is. I do believe it's possible. You need to train yourself, creating on purpose different scenarios and situations. You need to train management in a crisis situation to take decision to face the risk. You need to have the possibility of managing data in decisions, even in a remote way. You need to have a kind of specific training of the organisation. Of course this is possible. And on the other hand, I have to underline, you need to invest on risk prevention. You need to prepare your company and your organisation and this for sure has a cost, but the cost of prevention is always much, much lower than the cost of facing the risk here today.”
