Nordic Wind Loss Report: Loss Scenarios & Learnings 2026

Wind loss, blade damage Explore Marsh’s analysis of wind loss from ~2,500 Nordic onshore turbines (2020–2025). Key findings on wind loss drivers, blade damage and resilience.

Uncover what’s driving wind‑farm claims across the Nordics and how operators, insurers and asset owners can better manage risk. The Loss Scenarios & Learnings 2026 report analyses insurance claims from 2020–2025 in Sweden, Norway and Finland to reveal where losses concentrate, which components are most vulnerable, and how claim drivers are evolving across the region.

Our regional analysis shows machinery breakdown is the single largest cause of claims (44% of incidents) while blades are the most frequently affected component (40% of claims). We also identify growing trends in lightning and impact damage, and individual claim values reaching as high as ~€6m. These findings translate directly into more informed underwriting, targeted maintenance programmes and resilience investments that reduce downtime and limit financial exposure.

Key findings

  • Scope and dataset: claims analysed from 2020–2025 across Sweden, Norway and Finland — regional, insurance-backed insight into operational risk.
  • Top claim causes: machinery breakdown accounts for the largest share of claims (44%).
  • Most affected components: blades are the single most frequently claimed component (40% of claims).
  • Emerging loss drivers: notable increases in lightning strikes and impact damage incidents over the analysis period.
  • Cost profile: average and median claim costs by cause and component, with individual losses observed up to ~€6 million.
  • Trend dynamics: machinery breakdown frequency has decreased over time while weather- and impact-related claims are rising.
  • Concentration of risk: losses are not evenly distributed — a small number of high-severity events drive a large share of total cost.
