Despite best efforts, sometimes unsafe products, or those that do not meet legislative requirements, circumvent quality management controls and make their way into the marketplace. When an unsafe product has left the control of the manufacturer/distributor, it must be removed from the market. This process of removing the product is called a recall.
Recalls present a real threat to many organisations through:
- Loss of sales.
- Customer confidence.
- Supply contracts.
However, a well-handled recall can reduce the negative impacts of an incident and could even improve the reputation of your organisation by demonstrating honesty and integrity.
Recall Objectives
Plans must be specific to the activities being undertaken by an organisation, however all recall plans should have the following key objectives:
- Preventing further delivery and sale of the product in question.
- Informing the appropriate regulatory agencies and customers.
- Proper and timely removal from the marketplace of the product in question.
