Asia rates decline across all major lines

Insurance rates in Asia declined 5% in the second quarter, led by cyber.

Property insurance rates decline; capacity and competition levels increase

Property insurance rates declined 5%, the same as the last four quarters.

  • Insurer capacity and competition levels increased across most markets and industries.
  • Conditions enabled some clients to achieve improved terms, including securing higher limits and reducing non-concurrencies.

Asia casualty

Casualty rates decline amid ample regional and global capacity

Casualty insurance rates declined 3%, compared to a 2% decline in the prior quarter.

  • General liability rates declined or remained stable across most markets, except in Japan, where localized rate increases were seen.
  • Across most of the region, umbrella and excess liability rates moderated or remained flat; Korea saw decreases of up to 15%. Japan recorded rate increases of up to 5%.
  • Clients generally continued to benefit from ample capacity from both regional and global insurers.

Asia financial and professional lines

Financial and professional lines rates decline; regional capacity remains stable

Financial and professional lines rates declined 7%, the same as the prior quarter.

  • Directors and officers liability (D&O) rates declined across most Asian markets, remaining stable in Vietnam.
  • Professional liability rates also declined across most Asian markets, remaining stable in Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, and the Philippines.
  • Rates for financial institutions declined broadly, remaining stable in Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
  • Capacity remained stable across the region.
  • Large and complex programs with substantial premiums continued to attract strong insurer interest.
  • The shift of Chinese IPO activity toward regional exchanges, such as Hong Kong, reduced large-premium opportunities and increased the level of insurer competition.

Cyber rates decline as competition levels rise

Cyber insurance rates decreased 8%, compared to a 6% decrease in the prior quarter.

  • Most of the region saw rates decrease; in Vietnam rates remained stable.
  • Insurers continued to deploy more capacity in priority markets and sectors, leading to high levels of competition.
  • Regulators called for stronger cybersecurity measures in response to rising cyber threats driven by artificial intelligence (AI). Insurers took a more cautious approach to AI-related exposures, often applying sub-limits and exclusions. Still, most clients were able to obtain higher limits and broader coverage at renewal.
  • First-time buyers in Southeast Asia increasingly purchased cyber insurance amid greater government emphasis on cyber resilience.
