Marsh's Energy & Power Work Experience has expanded

Marsh’s 2023 Work Experience Programme successfully introduced “Specialty Week” – providing a more varied syllabus for delegates to benefit from, delivered by industry experts.

Delegates enjoy expanded Work Experience Programme with broader Marsh Specialty syllabus

The 2023 edition of Marsh’s Work Experience Programme successfully introduced “Specialty Week” – providing a more varied and broadened syllabus for delegates. Previous programmes focused primarily on the Energy & Power practice and industry, one of the many industries and practices comprising Marsh Specialty.

First held in London in 2017, the ensuing years have seen Marsh’s Work Experience Programme move from strength to strength. It has been a huge success in attracting a diverse talent pool from local schools – with many attending who had no prior insurance industry knowledge. Additionally, the programme has helped develop a valuable recruitment pipeline for both the Marsh apprenticeship and graduate schemes.

“To be a part of their journey really is an honour – I am passionate about providing the guidance and tools these young people need to help them make decisions regarding a potential career. If we can inspire and help these delegates in any way during this critical time for them, then I believe that is objective achieved.” – Jayne Stevens, UK Specialty Work Experience Leader, Marsh.

In 2023, Marsh expanded the programme, hosting 81 students over a three-week period. Scheduled after the end of the summer term, each weeklong programme included a full day demonstrating how the industry works. The first two weeks were held in our London office, one dedicated to Energy & Power and one focussing on Specialty. The final week was held at our Norwich office, also covering Specialty.

As delegates were absorbing vast amounts of information throughout the week, Marsh colleagues ensured that the programme was both insightful and interactive. Delegates enjoyed many engaging, hands-on workshop activities and practical experiences – as opposed to total lecture-based learning.

“Prior to this week, I knew very little about the industry, but the numerous activities thankfully ignited an interest in me to pursue a career within this. All speakers were approachable and spoke with passion, allowing me and the other students to ask questions which broadened my knowledge and widened my network of professional contacts.” Hope - Marsh Work Experience Programme delegate.

The 2023 programme provided an overview of the insurance market, as well as specific insights into the range of Marsh Specialty industry and risk practices, including Energy & Power, Marine, Aviation & Space, Construction, FINPRO, Bowring Marsh, Credit Specialty, and Real Estate & Advisory. Delegates explored how different types of insurance provide value within specific industries, how Marsh meets the needs of our clients, and the role of both a client executive and broker. Marsh Speciality practice experts also spoke on emerging risk and industry innovation topics, such as the energy transition and renewable technologies.

Additionally, wider business topics and vital skills were covered. Delegates participated in workshops on negotiation skills, interview techniques, presentation skills, and office etiquette and behaviour, for example. All workshops are designed to provide key skills that enable delegates to be prepared for a working environment.

A balance was struck between the classroom-based education and practical experiences to reinforce what had been learned. In London, delegates spent a day accompanying underwriters at their London offices and shadowing brokers in the market. In Norwich, participants had the opportunity to visit the Windfarm Exhibition at Sheringham Museum – an asset visit that made the insurance coverages discussed more relatable.

“This immersive journey provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the finance and insurance industry, while honing essential skills for a successful career. The interactive sessions and constructive feedback were instrumental in enhancing my interview techniques and boosting my self-confidence. I'm now better equipped to tackle future interviews with professionalism.” Jibran - Marsh Work Experience Programme delegate.

Marsh is excited to build on the success of this year’s Work Experience Programme for subsequent editions. We hope to continue providing these opportunities for local school students – offering industry exposure at an early age to those normally unable to access careers in insurance.
