Session Descriptions

Tuesday February 7, 2023

Pre-Conference Masterclasses

Masterclasses      (Parallel sessions, attend 1 of 4)

#1 Supply Chain: The Evolution of Integration

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Define what makes a supply chain in the energy and power sector and explain how an interrupted supply chain can affect the sector.
  • Explain the key features of a Business Interruption policy and identify key reasons for buying this cover
  • Identify business interruption risks in an evolving energy industry

Energy transition will only bring further integration to supply chains and increased commercial complexity. Understanding how to approach these novel risks in respect of Business Interruption (BI) insurance can be a tricky prospect. Join us to discuss how to identify the range of insurable BI exposures faced by these multifaceted operations and how to manage them within your risk management framework.

Facilitators:

Rachel Ramskill, Business Interruption & Emerging Risks Leader, MEA, Marsh
Lawrence Walters, Business Interruption Risk Engineer, Energy & Power, Marsh
Ernest Eng, Head of Analytics MEA, Marsh Advisory

#2 The Innovative Use of Captives for Complex Risks

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Define captive insurance and explain the roles of a captive insurer and how it can become a valuable risk management tool for organizations
  • Define the life cycle of a captive
  • Define the captive’s role in enhancing ESG

This masterclass will provide global insight on captive utilization in the energy industry, including innovative usage in the management of complex and evolving risks. Regulation and market dynamics are driving a global trend in energy captive expansion of non-traditional areas such as cyber, supply chain and employee benefits. This masterclass will explore these trends and focus in detail on those key steps to implementation.

Facilitator:

Ellen Charnley, President, Marsh Captive Solutions
Ronny Vellekoop, Senior Executive Officer, MEA, Marsh Captive Solutions

#3 A Holistic View on Cyber Risk Management

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the potential impacts of an OT Cyber event to the business.
  • Identify the factors that increase cyber risks in the OT environment.
  • Define the key challenges that the energy and power industry is facing around Cyber.

If there is one constant in the world of cybersecurity, it is that nothing stays the same. Marsh has taken the data and tools used to insure cyber risk and reshaped them to develop a quantitative approach – to determine exposures specific to a company’s assets, with consideration for their operational flexibility and the IT/OT infrastructure in place.

Facilitators:

Pepijn de Jong, Cyber Risk Consulting Leader MENA, Marsh Advisory
Nick Holland, Engineering Hub Leader, Saudi Arabia, Marsh

#4 Risk Benchmarking: Eliminating Unconscious Bias

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Provide a brief background on benchmarking
  • Explain the role of data analytics in energy insurance
  • Explain the relevance of benchmarking in energy insurance

The importance of being objective in engineering is nothing new; however, unconscious bias can influence our view on risk, meaning de-biasing should be a key focus of decision makers. In this masterclass, we will discuss analytical techniques, methods, and interventions that are designed to improve people’s judgement and support them to make better informed risk decisions.

Facilitators:

Fay Obaidi, Data Analytics & BI Engineer, Energy & Power, Marsh
Jenni Morrison, Data Analytics & BI Engineer, Energy & Power, Marsh
David Causi, Consulting & Analytics Engineering Leader, Middle East & Africa, Marsh

15:30-17:00   Afternoon Masterclass

#5 ESG Explored

By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of sustainability and ESG and  how ESG and sustainability are connected
  • Explain what climate risks are and how these may threaten the energy industry
  • List possible solutions to address Climate Risks
  • Define the role of risk management and how it is futureproofing energy businesses

While every company’s ESG transition will be unique, all successful transitions will be based on a sound understanding of stakeholders, supply chains, and citizens around the globe; balancing short-term profit with longer-term ambition, and weighing first-mover advantage against existential threats of falling behind. By developing and deploying short- and long-term strategies to quantify, manage, and mitigate ESG risk, you can distinguish your operations with key stakeholders, protect your  brand, and deliver commercial and competitive advantages. This workshop will discuss the various strategies and actions that can be taken for this increasingly important topic.

Facilitators:

Scott Williams, ESG Coordinating Director, Middle East & Africa, Marsh
Amy Barnes, Head of Climate and Sustainability Strategy, Marsh
Shivan Hutton, Head of Specialty, Africa, Marsh

#2 Geopolitics: Walking the Tightrope

With an uncertain future, geopolitical risks are posing an increasing threat to the global economy. The war of Russia/Ukraine, US-China tensions, European energy security, and the future of Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs are all areas that may impact global business. This workshop will take a global view of the current risks at play, before delving into specific topics to discuss strategies for managing these risks.

#4 Climate Response: Now or Never

Our world’s climate is changing, and with it comes changing weather patterns. Hurricane season, Californian wildfires, Pakistan floods and Iran-Iraq earthquakes have acted as stark reminders of the ability of nature to stop human progress in its tracks. This workshop will focus on how these exposures are evolving and how we can work to quantify, proactively inform and minimize impact of these changes.

Major incidents in our industries tend to have one common contributing factor – a deficiency in the process safety culture (PSC) of the organization. Culture exists on many levels, but our leaders are in a powerful position as they influence others on a daily basis through their conversations, decisions, behaviors and actions. This workshop will discuss the key cultural characteristics exhibited by process safety leaders, outlining how these factors are managed in practice, and how to measure its influence when assessing risk.
