Meet Eric

I currently negotiate property and casualty insurance for corporations of all sizes in a multitude of industries. My day-to-day is typically composed of providing advice to clients on the insurance market and their renewal strategy, taking calls with insurance markets domestically and internationally, and building relationships with underwriters.

Why did you choose to go into the insurance industry?

My path into the industry was not a straightforward one and certainly not something that can fit in a paragraph, so I’ll just say that the industry found me! Marsh was the only insurance company that I applied for in university; the idea of being a risk advisor to companies in so many different industries definitely was exciting.

How does your work support our company in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

When Marsh works with clients, the focus is on creating risk management programs that help clients meet their business goals instead of trying to fit clients into existing insurance products. In my role, I take time to learn the operations, industry and risks specific to each client to design and negotiate tailored insurance programs.

Marsh has a strong learning culture. Tell us about something new you learned recently. How did you learn it?

I am currently learning as a leader how to advocate for my team to upper management and how to inspire confidence amongst team members. I was very fortunate to have been paired up with a member of the executive committee in Marsh’s Young Professional Mentorship program who has been helping me achieve my professional goals. We have a very collaborative culture here and everyone is always willing to offer a helping hand.

How does our company support you in giving back to our communities?

“Communities” is one of the stakeholders that we work for in this company. As we conduct our goal-setting and performance review at the end of the year, how we positively impact the communities around us plays a meaningful role. Some practical resources available to us include paid volunteer time, team volunteer events, and annual volunteering campaigns.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

My Chinese heritage and Christian faith go hand in hand in teaching me the tenants of honesty, trust, persistence, and love. These principles serve as guideposts as I conduct business ethically, embrace and mentor diverse colleagues, and drive results for clients.

What is the most meaningful advice you’ve received?

The best time to love someone is now and later is often too late. This shapes the way I approach my relationship with every colleague and business partner. Whenever I think of someone, I always send a note to tell them I’m thinking of them. Whenever I meet someone, I always come with an offer to help instead of thinking about what I can get from them.
