Meet Joshua

As a casualty client advisor, I focus on servicing our diverse clients and coverage lines, including, but not limited to, general liability, auto liability for bodily injury, and property damage. I work closely with our Placement colleagues in various industries and coverage lines. Our main objective is to educate our clients on the fluctuating environment and appetite of the marketplace to ensure they understand the impact of coverages for their exposures.

How does your work support our company in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

My efforts are mainly to evaluate our client's portfolio to alleviate net costs in the event of a loss to bring balance sheet protection. As a firm, we offer unparalleled analysis and modeling offerings. Through Marsh’s emerging capabilities, we continue to provide insightful knowledge and analytics to our clients to support them in making data-informed decisions with the goal of achieving optimal results.

Tell us about something new you learned recently.

In an increasingly data-driven society, I have recently become involved with developing analytics to assist in servicing our clients. Our Casualty department offers learning courses, such as claims handling, understanding emerging risks and trends, and analytics. Along with personal training from leadership, I work to fully understand and deploy Marsh’s capabilities to help our clients establish strategies for treating risks at the highest levels.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

My mother and my older brother have been significant influences on me. My mother was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, where Spanish was her first language, before moving to the United States. As early as I can remember, she has demonstrated and instilled in our family the importance of an enormous work ethic and selflessness. She raised five children on her own and ensured we had the best education possible while working tirelessly to provide for us. Even today, she works the graveyard shift for her current employer and continues to put family first.

My older brother, who also works at Marsh, leads by example with the qualities our mother taught us. He learned early that work ethic beats talent, and his humility and devotion to various stakeholders pay dividends socially and professionally. My brother is a natural leader and demonstrates this quality daily. As a first-generation college student, he has been a great role model to me, and I could not be any more proud to share the last name with him.

I strive to demonstrate the qualities I learned from my family in the workplace. As a board member of the New York chapter of Marsh’s Young Professionals colleague resource group, I believe that communicating consistently and proactively demonstrating appreciation can further achieve a more diverse and equitable environment.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Always run towards the problem, never away from it. We all encounter adversity, and problem-solving is a skill that requires practice. Although I will always be a student in this area, I have learned to weigh benefits and considerations when resolving issues and to engage my peers for additional perspectives. I am fortunate that Marsh's collaborative culture fosters a learning environment where I can grow and tackle challenges alongside my colleagues. The willingness to face uncomfortable situations can open up many opportunities. If I ever have the privilege of leading any of my colleagues, I intend to pay this forward as my mentors have done for me.
