On May 28, Marsh Canada hosted a Mining Forum in our Toronto office. The event included a panel discussion that covered risk exposures and potential resultant liabilities with respect to tailings storage facilities (TSFs), with a particular emphasis on governance.
The discussion aimed to highlight those largely non-technical risks that may be introduced over the lifecycle of TSFs and which often do not receive the same level of consideration as technical risks but which may materially affect a risk profile and ultimately result in material liabilities.
The discussion panel was comprised of:
- Ross Cooper, BSc, Eng., General Manager, Technical Services, Fraser Alexander (Pty) Ltd. South Africa
- Charles Dumaresq, M.Sc., Vice President, Science and Environmental Management, Mining Association of Canada (MAC)
- Larry Lowenstein, Partner, Corporate and Securities Litigation, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
- Richard Stahl, B.AP.SC., PH.D., M.SC. (SLOAN), P.ENG., CENG., FICE., Director of International Operations, Forensics, Jensen Hughes
- Steve Osselton (moderator), Managing Director, Client Advisory Services, Marsh Canada Limited
A similar event is planned for September 24 in British Columbia. Details will follow.
