Improving contractor safety with streamlined data management

The challenge

A large rolling owner-controlled insurance program (OCIP) had significant safety concerns with its contractor population. The project owner and other property stakeholders lacked visibility into disparate data sources related to contractors, making it difficult to properly identify trends, assess risks, and implement effective safety improvements.  

The solution

RiskIQ leveraged our proprietary web-based Data Navigator platform to deliver a custom dashboard to better organize, analyze, and sort the client’s tiered safety observation system. Our team was able to identify that 24% of its contractor population was receiving an A or B deficiency, which are categorized as critical and serious deficiencies. (All observations were coded A, B, C, or D, with A denoting a critical deficiency and D being the least onerous.)

Of immediate concern for the client, the platform helped uncover that A and B deficiencies were linked to 78% of claims frequency and 72% of claims severity. Although not every A or B safety observation led to a claim, the client recognized that contractors with these deficiencies posed a substantial risk to overall project safety and financial outcomes. 

The result

By leveraging the Data Navigator platform, the client benefited from:

  1. Enhanced monitoring: The client established a more rigorous monitoring system for contractors receiving A or B deficiencies, making it possible for project teams to be alerted promptly to any safety concerns.
  2. Decreased claims frequency and severity: The client observed a significant reduction in claims frequency and severity, directly correlating with the improved safety performance of contractors.
  3. Financial savings: Ultimately, the client experienced financial savings due to reduced claims and improved contractor performance, positively impacting the overall financial health of the projects involved. 

Conclusion

The implementation of RiskIQ's Data Navigator platform significantly enhanced contractor safety within the OCIP by streamlining data management and improving visibility into safety performance for this Client. 

For this Client, the platform proved invaluable in transforming safety data into actionable insights, ultimately fostering a safer and more cost-efficient project environment.
