Meet Craig

I lead the FINPRO practice for the Pacific region, which includes leading 120 financial line brokers. I work with clients in the banking, legal, travel, gaming, healthcare, and insurance industries, which gives me exposure to many and varied issues and opportunities across these sectors. As the leader, I'm responsible for all aspects of the practice, including growth, financials, retention and attraction of talent, learning and development, product knowledge, and technical components.

How does your work support our company in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

My team and I guide and assist our clients with the almost constant changes in their work environments. These include regulatory, litigation, market, societal, and claims matters. All of which keeps me and my team at the very top of our game in terms of knowledge and capacity to provide insightful and practical advice. Additionally, we bring in other areas of our enterprise to benefit clients, such as quantitative analysis, Oliver Wyman, and Mercer Marsh Benefits, ensuring that the offerings we bring to clients are unmatched by any of our competitors.

Tell us about something new you learned recently. What motivated you to pick up this knowledge? How did you go about learning it?

Recently I completed a mental health first aid course. As a leader and people manager, I’m frequently exposed to situations where mental health issues can impact our people and clients, affecting both work and personal lives. I wanted to educate myself to be better equipped to handle these situations and provide more than a “sympathetic ear.” Marsh introduced me to and allowed me to participate in a fairly strenuous course run by colleagues within the Mercer practice and gave me accreditation from Mental Health First Aid Australia. This not-for-profit organization develops and runs training programs in this space.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

From a very early age, I learned that I possessed natural leadership skills and was a person of very strong character. As a gay man, I have struggled with many issues in accepting my sexuality and the world around me. Ultimately, it's been my personal strength that I have come to rely upon and trust. In what can seem an often cruel and uncaring world, this has made me the resilient person I am today. As I have matured, I've learnt that you don't always need to be “strong” – vulnerability can be just as important an asset as strength.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

As a leader, you don't have to "know everything,” but you need to surround yourself with quality talent, rely on their skills and ability, and let them shine.
