Meet Michael

I’m a client executive within the Education Practice, meaning that I manage the insurance programmes for a portfolio of independent schools in the UK. I enjoy having a specialism that I can zone in on and become an expert in that field. A typical day will involve being out on the road visiting schools to negotiate policy renewals, ensuring the programme remains fit for purpose, and generally dealing with issues as they arise.

One of the real perks of the job is seeing the unique and historic architecture many of our school's enjoy – particularly the older ones. They're not always the easiest to insure, but they are fascinating to look at.

How does your work support our company in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

A large part of my job is trying to anticipate issues and client concerns and provide solutions before they become problems. This could be adapting their insurance programme to the inflationary environment we find ourselves in or discussing upcoming issues such as ESG.

How does Marsh support you in giving back to your community?

In addition to my “day duties,” I’m the co-chair of the Pride Matters colleague resource group in the UK. Our main focus is to ensure that our LGBTQ+ colleagues are represented across the business, which we do via events, publications, and general engagement.

Outside of work, I volunteer as a mentor for a charity, Right There. The division I'm a part of provides mentoring to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. It's really rewarding and provides some grounding to me. I came from a working-class background, but the business world can sometimes be insular, and we forget the hardships some young people endure, not just to succeed but simply to break out of certain cycles. The first priority is always helping the young person, but I do take a lot from it personally. It gives me a good perspective on life, especially when I feel I'm getting too comfortable. I get great support from my practice with this. Whilst most of the work is done outside of business hours, training and meetings can encroach on a working day from time to time, and it's great to have the support of my managers.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

I was in high school in a small town in Scotland in the (very) early noughties, so LGBTQ+ representation just wasn't a thing. It makes it very difficult as a young person growing up when you don't see anyone else like you – whether that's on TV or in the classroom. The takeaway for me is that we must never take our representation for granted. It's something I think about almost daily.

Tell us about something new you learned recently. What motivated you to pick up this new skill or knowledge, and how did you learn it?

I quite enjoy cooking, and my partner (fairly) recently became vegan, so I've had to relearn how to cook without meat, fish, or dairy. Very pleased to say it's becoming easier every day with more vegan products appearing on our shelves.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

A former boss and mentor once told me that no matter where we are in a company, "we are all people managers." To get the most out of ourselves and our colleagues, we need to learn to manage upwards (and sideways) as much as we are managed downwards. I truly believe this and apply it almost daily.
