Razia Daud

Risk Manager, Marsh McLennan | Wellington, New Zealand

  • Job Title: Risk Manager, Marsh McLennan
  • Office Location: Wellington, New Zealand
  • Personal Interests and Hobbies: Most of them revolve around being the best cheerleader I can be for my 9-year-old daughter’s activities: golf, violin, and swimming. But you can also catch me attending meditation retreats, researching authentic recipes and then attempting to create them for my family.

What is your role at Marsh McLennan?

Risk Manager. I wasn’t always a Risk Manager though. I’ve been a librarian, retail salesperson, airline electronic e-ticketer, project consultant, organisational development adviser, legal adviser and a Risk and Compliance Manager.

Who is your inspiration?

I’m inspired by the people who are good human beings, who persevere to co-create and co-lead with others to achieve collective goals. The people who celebrate the small wins, who remember the small things, who respect boundaries, the ones who make you feel energised after seeing them, the ones who allow you to be fully yourself, and who contribute to creating safe spaces and the ones who share their goals and support yours.

What's the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?

Believe in yourself. When you’re hired for a role, it’s because you can do the role. Put your signature on it and leave a legacy beyond work outputs. Remember that everyone is a human being with feelings and real-life problems, even our leaders. One of my previous managers always reminded me: Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. Don’t worry about what you don’t know; work is a dance; you learn as you go.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Don’t sit back and wait to be noticed. Only you can put in that 110% to get where you want to go so don’t give up and sit back because you think you can’t do it. Be courageous and put yourself out there!

How do you bring your "whole self to work?"

I strive to live an authentic, purposeful, and meaningful life, so I have no choice but to bring my whole self to work. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point of self-acceptance, honesty, letting go of self-judgement, fear and giving myself permission to be vulnerable. I accept that I don’t have all the answers, but what I do know is that I will do my best to find the best solutions.

What excites you about working at Marsh McLennan?

Marsh McLennan actively works to create a space for colleagues to be curious and explore the opportunities and barriers to producing high quality outcomes without feeling constrained. We are real people with a real passion for what we do, and we get to do it in an authentic, meaningful, and purposeful way. It truly is an organisation that values diversity and encourages us to bring our whole selves to our work and really thrive.
