Meet Kevin

As the public entity practice leader for the US, I lead over 300 global public entity practice colleagues at Marsh who deliver risk strategy, service, and transactional solutions to more than 500 US public sector clients. My expertise is in assisting clients, including not-for-profits and public entities, with property, casualty, and employee benefits strategies with an emphasis on cost containment.

I also sit on the Marsh McLennan Advantage Global Public Entity Steering Committee. The committee is responsible for the global strategy, growth, and retention of Marsh McLennan’s more than $400 million public entity business.

Recently, I was named to the Greenville Business Magazine's 2023 50 Most Influential list for South Carolina. I also serve on the Board of Trustees at Furman University and Meharry Medical College.

How does your work support Marsh in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

The needs of the public sector for trusted and coordinated consulting and transaction support are growing, driven by global trends associated with natural (e.g., climate change) and man-made (e.g., cyber) risks, rising healthcare costs, and aging populations. Marsh McLennan’s coordinated one enterprise go-to-market approach allows us to deliver compelling commercial and social impact solutions to be seen as the Risk Advisor of the future within the public sector.

How has being a mentor, mentee, or both shaped your life and career?

Mentoring and giving back has always been a part of my DNA. I am the product of the time and treasure of many good people who took an interest in me. As a result, uplifting youth is a cause that is near and dear to me and my family. There is so much we can do to make a positive difference in our communities by helping to light the spark of future leaders and guide them in fulfilling their potential and shaping the world.

My wife, Mitzi, and I are very active in our local community and work closely with several mentoring and charitable organizations. Among these nonprofits is one focused on ending generational poverty and another dedicated to preparing Black students and other historically underserved youth for college and careers.

Additionally, I’ve found that some of the richest mentoring relationships spring up informally; these are instances in which you see the unlimited possibilities in a rising professional or other colleague and take a vested interest in advancing their career. As someone who has reaped the rewards of the time and treasure others invested in me and, as a result, achieved a sales career that enabled me to grow professionally and personally beyond what I ever imagined – I feel driven to pay that forward. For example, I’ve encouraged some of my mentees to consider career paths that were not yet on their radar, connected them with other talent who recently transitioned into specific fields, and introduced mentees to leadership to explore possible opportunities. I'm at a stage in my career where prioritizing the growth and success of others and watching them flourish and achieve is top of mind.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

I was raised by a single mother who worked in a mill factory. She had 22 years of perfect attendance until she was stricken by breast cancer. I observed daily what it means to overcome. She taught me I could rise to the level of my talent, education, and discipline.

How does our company support you in giving back to your communities?

Marsh McLennan’s Social Impact double match program has allowed me to fund endowed scholarships for college students from disadvantaged backgrounds — young men and women who share my upbringing.

Our Social Impact program encourages colleagues globally to volunteer and give to the causes that are meaningful to them. The company provides colleagues with paid time off annually to volunteer, and tracked volunteer hours can be converted into a monetary-equivalent reward that can be donated to eligible charities of choice each year.

I’m also deeply committed to diversity and inclusion. I’m a member of Marsh’s US Diversity Council member and the executive sponsor of the African Heritage Colleague Resource Group, aimed at supporting Black colleagues and nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment at our firm.
